BG Randall V. Simmons, Jr. is the Assistant Adjutant General - Army
of the Georgia National Guard and serves as the Commanding General
of the Georgia Army National Guard headquartered in Marietta,
GA. BG Simmons was appointed to his current position in 2017,
after serving 33 months as the Chief of Staff for the Georgia Army
National Guard. He commanded the 48th Infantry Brigade Combat
Team (IBCT) from 2013 to 2015 during which time he deployed elements
of the 48th IBCT to Kabul, Afghanistan.


His previous assignments include service as the G1/Deputy Chief
of Staff for Personnel of the Georgia Army National Guard, Deputy
Commander of the 48th IBCT, Commander of the 1st Squadron,
108th Cavalry Regiment encompassing a successful Afghanistan deployment
in support of Operation Enduring Freedom (2009 to
2010), Executive Officer and S3/Operations Officer of the 48th IBCT
from 2006 to 2008. BG Simmons also served as the Executive Officer
of the 1st Battalion, 118th Field Artillery (Task Force Cobra) while
deployed in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom (2005 to 2006).
BG Simmons graduated from Georgia Southern University in
Statesboro, Ga. earning a Bachelor of Science in education. In 2013
he received a Master’s degree is Strategic Studies from the United
States Army War College in Carlisle, Pa.
BG Simmons enlisted in the Georgia Army National Guard in 1989
as a Forward Observer and was commissioned a Second Lieutenant
in October 1992 by the Macon-based Georgia Military Institute. His
military education includes the Field Artillery Officer Basic Course,
Field Artillery Officer Advanced Course, Maneuver Captains Career
Course, Paladin Commanders Course, Combined Arms Services
Staff School, Joint Firepower Control Course, U.S. Army
Command and General Staff College – Intermediate Level Education,
Infantry Pre-Command Course, U.S. Army School of Command
Preparation Pre-Command Course, Tactical Commanders
Development Program, and the Advanced Joint Professional Military
Education course. I addition, he is a graduate of the Harvard
University - General and Flag Officer Homeland Security Executive
Seminar, the National Defense University - Rising Leaders Forum,
and Army Strategic Education Program - Basic.
Among his many decorations are the Legion of Merit (3), the
Bronze Star Medal (2), Meritorious Service Medal (4), Joint Service
Commendation Medal, Army Commendation Medal (3),
Army Achievement Medal (3), Army Reserve Component Achievement
Medal (5), National Defense Service Ribbon (2), Afghanistan
Campaign Medal (3), Iraqi Campaign Medal (2), Combat Infantry
Badge, Combat Action Badge, Army Service Ribbon, Overseas
Service Ribbon, NATO Non-Article 5 ISAF Medal, Order of Saint
Barbara, Order of Saint George, and Order of Saint Maurice. His
state awards include the Georgia Meritorious Service Medal, Georgia
Commendation Medal (2), Georgia Special Operations Ribbon
(3), Georgia National Guard Service Medal (2), Georgia State Active
Duty Ribbon, and the Georgia National Guard Recruiting Ribbon.
BG Simmons lives in Canton, Ga. and is married to the former Yetive
Chason. They have two children; Callie (10) and Luke (7).
